How We Review
Every recommendation on ShopRVGear is built on a documented research process — not manufacturer relationships or pay-to-play placement. Our research is led by Salem Hassan, founder of Travelcamp RV, with 30+ years in RV, marine, and powersports retail, and reviewed by Alana Azzouz, our Senior Editor with a decade of consumer journalism experience.
How We Select Products
We start with the problem a reader needs to solve, not the product. For each guide we build a candidate list from manufacturer specifications, verified owner reviews, industry standards, and Salem's direct dealership experience with specific brands and failure patterns.
We do not accept free products in exchange for coverage. We do not allow brands to pay for placement or ranking. Products are selected and ranked on merit alone.
Our Research Process
- Identify the exact use case and compatibility requirements (coach type, electrical system (30A vs. 50A), and tow rating)
- Pull spec sheets and installation manuals from official manufacturer sources — not just the marketing page
- Read hundreds of verified owner reviews per product, weighting reports from 12+ months of real use
- Identify the most common failure modes and warranty issues reported after extended real-world RV use
- Map each product to the use case it best serves — with explicit trade-off notes for everything that didn't rank first
How We Rate Products
Ratings reflect a weighted combination of build quality, real-world durability, value at price, ease of installation, and fit for the stated use case. "Best Overall" picks must perform well across use cases. "Best For" sub-picks acknowledge trade-offs explicitly — a best-for-budget pick is not the same as a best overall recommendation. We do not publish a rating without a documented reason behind it.
Affiliate Links & Independence
Some links on ShopRVGear are affiliate links — we earn a commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you. This is disclosed on every page that contains affiliate links. Affiliate income never determines which products we recommend or how we rank them. If a product we link to stops being the best option, we update the guide.
How Often We Update
Every buying guide shows a last-reviewed date. We refresh guides at least quarterly — and sooner when a significant new model enters the market, a firmware update changes performance, or owner feedback materially shifts our assessment of a ranked product.
